"we should be preparing ourselves for this – psychologically, socially, economically and politically"
Yea, 30 years ago !!
"voluntarily embracing a ‘’simpler life”" ??
"Consume less, live more" ??
Yea right, are we talking about the human race? since when were humans that smart?
The problem is human evolutionary biology.
A number of admirable sentiments are expressed in this piece, the reality is that people will only change when it becomes too difficult to continue the way they are going.
A good introduction to this whole issue is John Michael Greer's book The Long Descent and anything by Richard Heinberg.
How much of consumer society are YOU, dear reader willing to voluntarily give up?? and will the government let you??
Finally, we are actually in the early stages of the decline of industrial civilisation AND an economic depression which began in 2008 and may continue for a decade or more. Global oil production has apparently flatlined since 2005, maybe there's a connection, maybe not. Either way global credit/debt has peaked and is unraveling, the ensuing deflationary depression will help prepare people for the post oil age, that would have to be a good thing.
