The big mistake was when Stephen Salter decided to generate electricity from the waves in a fixed location. At that time we were burning cheap oil to raise steam to run our steam turbines - until the price of oil shot up in the 70s! All that renewables needed to do then, and now, was to generate heat from the kinetic and potential energy in waves, wind and tidal streams to raise the necessary steam. For every 3MWh(thermal), 1MW(green electricity)can be generated from existing fossil fuelled power stations' steam turbines.

Pretty obvious stuff I agree - but a billion 1MW wind turbines will still need a billion MW of thermal backup for when the wind stops blowing.

What the bejeezus are we playing about at in this country when we have sooooooooooooooo many waves surrounding us to USE!!! Our esteemed Governmaent would rather cover the beautiful British landscape with Wind Farms and endanger our lives with Nuclear Reactors.

Nice to see the subject brought up. We have ready made solar cells that take up 60%? of the Earths surface and convert the solar energy into Kinetic energy. Tapping just a tiny percentage of this energy could supply us with more energy than we ever would need.

Disappointingly, you missed out Gentec WaTS. It can generate 24-7 from thermal stores heated by nomadic pelagic wave power converter ships - that go to where the waves are - instead of waiting for them to come to you!
