Living on the island of Kauai in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and being virtually surrounded by GMO crops and companies for nearly 40 years, the following concerns have been discussed in our community: 1) Will it be possible for us to have organic community-gardening formats to grow a variety of products without interference and/or resistance from GMO corporations?;2) Will the natural pollination process of our organically grown flowers, fruits and vegetables be compromised by GMO crops?;3) Will the pesticides and herbicides used by GMO companies eventually have adverse effects on our water and soil, and finally into our surrounding ocean waters? Who can help us who live in remote areas like our small-town communities with these kinds of concerns?

Hi,

Very interesting article. I'd like to know how permaculture can be an alternative to GMOs. Thank you.

Nathan, I also though along similar lines, however you can bet they hold majority shares and will NEVER allow enough enough shares to be sold, that could go against their wishes.
getting enough people together to buy that crucial 51% of votes, just won,t be possible.
best other option is to keep talking mailing and sharing the evil deeds done, and to find out ALL their subsidiary companies and BUY NOTHING that could enrich the bast**ds any more.

Are any of the companies that produce GMOs publicly traded? If so, it might not be a bad idea for ordinary citizens who are pro-organic and/or anti-GMO to join together and buy all of the stock, maybe then the stockholders will get the company to change. That almost seems like the easiest route, easier than trying to convince farmers everywhere to only buy organic non-GMO certified seeds. However, I know next to nothing about stocks and financial matters, so if anyone knows better than I, feel free to correct/comment.

Excellent article focusing on a very serious problem. I've mentioned the GMO issue several times on this site. It really upsets me to see our bee and bat populations disappear. Now we are noticing many reptile and insect species also disappearing. These problems are soley caused by GMO. We are also seeing many health problems arise from the consumption of GMO. Our bio-diversity is slowing shrinking. What upsets me even more is to find out the EPA in the US has deemed Carbon Dioxide a poisonous gas in regards to humans. If this is so, we would all be dead from exhaling so much of the substance. So many people have gotten caught up in the false information regarding climate change, they are completely disregarding the many serious problems we face. I am currently working hard to fight the GMO problem. It may be too late; however, nature is much more powerful than we could ever be.

Thank you for spreading the word on GMO's. Humans have gone from working with nature to thinking they can control nature. Eating this contaminated foods will get us in the end as biochemically our systems which were also created by nature cannot handle it. Children have shifted from dying from infectious diseases to being afflicted by degenerative diseases and it is growing worldwide. Nature wins in the end and nature is paying the bigger price. One can take only so much abuse. Genetic modification takes away the reproductive system from Nature, how would humans react if they were no longer permitted to reproduce and only allowed to clone?

I greatly dislike the passive undertones in this article. Since GMO contamination and court rulings are so outrageous and criminal, simply respond appropriately - as an upstanding independent human entity with its own moral boundaries and beliefs. Modify their genes. What's the worst that can happen? You die rather than live as an angry coward? The latter is far worse.
