For those interested in reading Fukuoka's book, it is available on the internet. Although still copyright material, The One-Straw Revolution is available in digital format upon request from the Soil and Health Library.

Great article, thanks. I'm growing rice with ducks in northern Thailand, with the help of Mollison's student Les Anwyl. This year we're doing a "duck tractor." That means we raise the ducks in the flooded paddy after harvest, then transplant right into the paddy without using a tractor to plow the field. Except for a few weeks after transplanting young seedlings, the ducks are left in the fields until the rice sets seed. We learned this from a progressive organic farmer in Chiang Mai Province.

You can see the video about it at: http://www.fairearthfarm.com/fair-earth-farmshop-video-30-jan-2010.html

Furuno's book is called "Power of Duck." It's a treasure.

Masanobu Fukuoka is the author of the classic, One Straw Revolution.

This is such a great system, thanks for describing it. Given our reliance on high tech agriculture I have been wondering about attempting to grow some of my own grain crops at home. Rice was my first choice. Has anyone had any success or some hints and tips to share. Perhaps a bathtub or some kind of animal water trough would be a good place to start? Any suggestions most welcome.
