I'd like to add one more book to the list of recommended reading: "1491" by Charles Mann. When I grew up (in Poland) I read a lot of books about Native Americans and I used to wonder why did they fail to defend their lands againts the invasion of the European colonizers? Couldn't they unite and fight together? For me and I think for my friends from the primary school, who also read about Indians, "us" meant Indians and "them" meant colonizers :)

If you ever wondered if Native American could have won with the Europeans and what did the Americas look like before the Colubus arrived, the book by Charles Mann would make a breath-taking reading.
