I have made a strw bale compost an they are great, I ove how the worms an beetles hide in the hay when it gets to hot! Also I love how it's completely natural an no metal involved as some important bacterias get killed by metal. Lastly I love that it lasts a good couple of years if you keep it protected from heavy rain with a cover of plastic over then when it does start breaking down to much, it makes the best mulch because of all the composted deposits through it. However I am looking for something different, as 20 bales, wich you need so you can flip the heap over back into the other bay, can take up a lot of area an was hoping to use something non-metal this time that will give more room too. Any ideas for a construct? Thanks

Hi, i have a question - i made a big compost pile as directed (in the tropics). Layering lots of organic matter (not so finely chopped, like grass clippings and lemongrass, leaves, small twigs).
we turned it as directed (4 days, then 2, 2, 2 etc). after a month it was about half way done, instead of the supposed 18 days.

it was hot, and steamed everytime we turned it.

Any idea why it took so long even though it was baking nicely? is dry cow poo lower in nitrogen? or the fact that there was so much dry carbon in there, and perhaps a bit big.
also, is it advisable to wet it down each turn?

thanks

Thank you for this posting. I am a novice gardener with no idea about gardening or composting and I found yours to be the best most basic breakdown of what composting is about and how to do it.

I am a composter.
I believe I am a Necromancer.
And I believe every composter are modern Necromancer.
Because, we work with the dead organics matter.
And we also raise the dead,
or make world live from death.
Every time we work..
We work for better living, from dead matter..
We are necromancer..
